The Queen’s birthdays

Queen Elizabeth II has two birthdays. Her real birthday is on April 21st. She was born in 1926. The Queen usually spends this day with her family. But people in London have special gun salutes at midday as well. There is 41 in Hyde Park, 21 in Windsor Park and 62 at the Tower of London.

Her 'official' birthday' is on the second Saturday of June. And there is a great parade in London on that day too. It is called Trooping the Colors. Over 1400 soldiers, 200 horses and 400 musicians take part in the parade.

Why does the Queen have two birthdays? This tradition started 250 years ago by King George II. He was born in November, but weather is usually bad in autumn. So, the king celebrated it in summer when there was a military parade. Thus, public birthday for kings and queens began!
